The second annual Back to Basics Atlantis challenge.
Sign-ups are now closed.
In the (slightly revised) words used to introduce this last year:
So, as fun as AUs and crackfic can be, I've been jonesing for stories set within the Atlantis we see on the show - characters that align with what we've seen in episodes, situations that we can extrapolate without leaping ten kilometers sideways, and a tone that also slides into canon. Thus, the Back to Basics: Atlantis story exchange.
Stories can be gen, het, or slash, depending on what’s requested, and can range from G to NC-17. (Het and slash relationships are allowed in the challenge as the author/requestor are building on something that they do see in canon - namely the chemistry between two characters.)
The minimum story length is 1000 words. No maximum story length - if you want to write a novel, go for it, so long as you can post it on August 24, 2007.
The goal of this challenge is to receive feedback saying: "this reads just like an episode (or a scene from an episode)” (perhaps with optional sex). And if you think about it, that’s not such a limiting factor!
Things seen in canon:
*Soul-eating space vampires
*Primitive cultures
*Cultures that have adapted to the Wraith threat in a variety of bizarre ways
*Pseudo-Amish farmers who turn out to be the next thing in Pegasus Galaxy fascism
*Mist planets that create entire realities inside our heroes’ heads
*Sheppard as a cold-blooded killer
*Sheppard as a mock-worthy doofus
*Rodney as a caring and effective member of an offworld team
*Rodney as a petty, arrogant, and bad-with-people scientist with delusions of grandeur
*Nanoviruses that can be destroyed by nuclear explosions
*Nuclear explosions
*Zelenka speaking Czech and squabbling with Rodney
*Zelenka and Rodney coming up with plans to save Atlantis and congratulating each other on their good thinking
*Teyla as the best fighter ever
*Teyla as sly and knowing and all-seeing
*Weir as the best negotiator ever
*Weir as den mother to grown men acting like adolescents
*Stories set in: the SGC, Antarctica, Atlantis, the wider Pegasus galaxy, the Daedelus
*Ronon lacking any table manners whatsoever
*Ronon habitually carrying half a dozen knives on his person
*Two consciousnesses sharing one body
*Retroviruses
*Carson as mad medical genius with no ethical constraints
*Carson as caring and good doctor
*Sea creatures
AUs aren't the purpose of the challenge, so please don’t ask for: any transformations of team members not seen in canon (such as: penguins or centaurs or reversion to childhood or genderswap (beyond the Duet scenario)); changes in the team structures or canonical backgrounds of the characters as revealed so far; changes in profession of characters seen so far; changes in the science as seen so far, stories set away from the greater Stargate program. Remember that the idea is to stick as closely to canon as possible – there’s still lots of ground to explore within those confines!
To sign up for the challenge, comment on this post and leave the following information (comments are screened to maintain an element of surprise):
1. Name (including LJ name)
2. Contact email
3. Three scenarios you’d like to receive in your story (only one of these will be written – this is to give your author options)
4. One thing you don’t want to write
5. Note here if you haven't seen the series through the end of season three, so we don't give you a spoiler-filled request
6. Are you willing to be a pinch hit author at the last minute?
For example:
1. Name: Pouncer
2. Email: pouncer77 at gmail
3. I'd like a story about:
a) Weir and Ronon dancing around their attraction to each other. Anything from G to NC-17.
b) McKay and Sheppard squabbling. Could be slashy.
c) Lorne dealing with the many challenges of being Sheppard's second in command. Gen preferred.
4. I can't do: Beckett as a sexual being
5: Pinch Hitter?: Yes
Although you’re providing three requests, the author only has to include one of them in the final story.
We'll be annotating this post with the names of those who've signed-up, so you have some idea of the scope of the challenge.

Schedule:
The sign-up period will be open from June 6 to July 1 (if I'm counting right, that should be the Sunday after the season three finale airs on SciFi).
Assignments will be sent out by July 6 (probably before), and should remain secret until the stories are posted.
Stories are due August 24th, and should be posted to the
atlantisbasics community by the author on that day (you can also post them to your personal LJ or any archive you want on that day, but not before).
On August 17th, we'll be emailing all participants to ask about your progress with your assigned story. If we don't receive an affirmative reply ("Yes, I'll be ready to post as of the deadline"), we'll arrange for a pinch-hit author at that time. Last go-round, there were a fair number of stories that never got posted, and we want to avoid disappointment for the authors who worked hard and met the deadline.
The organizers (myself and
akire_yta) will create a master list of all stories and link to it from the community profile page.
If, at any time, you find yourself unable to complete a story, notify the challenge organizers immediately so that we can find someone to fulfill the request.
Beta readers are encouraged, as is fact-checking. We'll be updating the list of resources as we get closer to handing out assignments.
Feel free to ask any questions here.
We hope you sign-up!

4. I can't do: femmeslash
5. Pinch Hitter?: Maybe

3. Three scenarios you’d like to receive in your story
a) Lorne, and how he deals with not only being Sheppard's second in command, but also to being new to Atlantis (if not to the world of Stargate).
b) Teyla, and how she deals with what happens during (and after) the events that take place in Michael.
c) Cadman and McKay squabbling, after her decision to remain on Atlantis. Gen.
4. One thing you don’t want to write Zelenka stories (love him, but can't write him)
5. Note here if you haven't seen the series through the end of season three Consider it noted (only seen the show through to the end of season 2).
6. Are you willing to be a pinch hit author at the last minute? Yes

3. Three scenarios you’d like to receive in your story (only one of these will be written – this is to give your author options)
1# John, Elizabeth and Carson get trapped offworld during a culling. Elizabeth or Carson saves the day.
2# John's team and Elizabeth are sent to an alternate reality via a quantum mirror they find in the unexplored areas of Atlantis.
3# McKay. Virtual reality simulation/s. Pie.
4. One thing you don’t want to write Teyla
5. Note here if you haven't seen the series through the end of season three, so we don't give you a spoiler-filled request I've only seen season 1 and 2.
6. Are you willing to be a pinch hit author at the last minute? Nope, sorry. I've already got 3 other ficathons to work on.

3. Three scenarios you’d like to receive in your story:
a) John centred, SG-1 visit Atlantis again, any rating
b) Lorne and Sheppard doing military leader things, any rating, gen or pairing
c) Teyla, Ronon, things they don't get about Earth, and vice versa, gen, pairing, not bothered.
4. One thing you don’t want to write I may regret saying this, but I'll try anything.
5. Series 3? Seen all the way to the end
6. Pinch hit? Sure.

3. I'd like a story about:
a) Elizabeth and Teyla saving everyone's collective asses.
b) Team-fic - how Sheppard, Ronon, and McKay see Teyla as a team-member. Shipping (any pair) and/or OT4 acceptable. :)
c) Rodney's respect for Elizabeth - how it evolved, where it goes. (McKay/Weir a bonus - anything from G to NC-17)
4. I can't do: SG-1 overlap - I don't know the characters well enough.
6. Pinch Hitter: Sure.
no subject
Date: 2007-06-09 03:31 am (UTC)ismene(dot)truth(at)gmail.com
I'd like a story about:
- Team Sheppard being protective of each other and kicking bad guy ass on a mission (ie, that scene in Irresponsible where they all offer to be shot first), with a possible side of h/c. Preferably gen.
- A crisis in Atlantis while Team Sheppard is away, so that Lorne has to be military commander, Zelenka has to break the laws of physics, and Elizabeth has to adjust to people who listen to her/like having guidance. Gen or a pairing that doesn't involve Team Sheppard is fine. Bonus points for Chuck the gate technician having a personality.
- Teyla being the center of an adventure; Ronon had Sateda, Rodney had Tao and Grace Under Pressure, Shep had Common Ground. I'll take any pairing or gen, as long as Teyla is the centerpoint.
I can't write: John and Elizabeth in a relationship. Any other pairing is fine.
Pinch-hit: Sure. *looks nervous but nods with confidence*

3. Three scenarios you’d like to receive in your story
1. How Atlantis resolves/gets out of the cliffhanger ending of the season finale
2. Hunting down the creatures from "Vengeance"
3. Lorne's team to the rescue!
Gen, het, and/or slash are all fine with me.

no subject
Date: 2007-06-11 03:41 am (UTC)2. aesc36 @gmail.com (minus space)
3. I'd like a story about:
- Rodney and John encouraging each other in their insanity. Slash is always okay.
- Attempts at educating Teyla and Ronon in Western popular culture. Slash/gen, whatever.
- Team!mission involving explosions (radiation optional), last-minute clever thinking, and some kind of injury. Slash/gen, whatever.
4. I can't do: I'm pretty flexible. My tendencies lean toward slash/pre-slash (and my favorite characters are John and Rodney), but I'm willing to write anything :)
5. Pinch-hit? Yes.

3. Three scenarios you’d like to receive in your story (only one of these will be written – this is to give your author options) First, John/Rodney is always preferred, as is OT4 lovin'.
a. John's poor sense of direction and consequences for the team.
b. Rodney as the petty, arrogant, bad-with-people scientist who is braver and more loving than he realizes.
c. Teyla feeling like an outsider and how she sees the Atlantians.
4. One thing you don’t want to write: John/Elizabeth
5. Note here if you haven't seen the series through the end of season three, so we don't give you a spoiler-filled request: I've seen it all
6. Are you willing to be a pinch hit author at the last minute? Not this time, alas.

3. scenarios: 1) Sheppard having problems with his ATA connection to the city; 2) Why was Kavanagh sending coded messages back to Atlantis in Critical Mass (nothing sympathetic; I want nefarious!); 3) Sheppard versus Kolya is always good. Overall - I like whump and h/c.
4. don't want to write: slash (unless the character is gay in canon)
5. spoiler aversion: Nope, seen 'em all!
6. pinch-hitter?: Sorry, no, I just don't write the fast.

3. Three scenarios you’d like to receive in your story (only one of these will be written – this is to give your author options)
… Honestly, I don’t care what scenario I’d like to receive. Not good writing extensive action…
4. One thing you don’t want to write: Slash
5. Note here if you haven't seen the series through the end of season three, so we don't give you a spoiler-filled request--
6. Are you willing to be a pinch hit author at the last minute?
Yeah

3. a) Sheppard doing things (normal, actual, things) that would be expected given he is an officer in the United States Air Force.
b) Anthropological aspects of inhabiting a base in a completely different galaxy, interacting w/ other cultures. Well, anthropological anything, really.
c) Science. Experiments that would be occuring as planned (as opposed to weird Pegasus stuff/emergencies), by prefrence
4. Sex. Though relationships is ok, just not sex.
6. Are you willing to be a pinch hit author at the last minute? I'd rather not.

3. I'd like a story about:
a) Rodney grappling with the duty of notifying next of kin - Sheppard helps, somewhat. Anything from G to R.
b) Ronon lacking any table manners whatsoever - Maybe Elizabeth helps. G - PG
c) Some connection between Carson and Teyla possibly in re: "Sunday". G
4. I can't do: I'm not really sure, but I'll know it if I see it.
5: Pinch Hitter?: No, sorry can't.

3. Three scenarios you’d like to receive in your story:
a) Zelenka makes a discovery. Any category, any rating.
b) Teyla feeling tension between her roles with the Atlantis expedition and with the Athosians. Any category, any rating.
c) Sheppard using ancient tech that *doesn't* malfunction. Gen or McKay/Sheppard, any rating.
4. McKay slashed with anyone but Sheppard.
5. I've seen all the episodes
6. I can try, but can't promise, as my summer schedule is still a bit up in the air.

3. Three scenarios you’d like to receive in your story: (1) Ship-in-a-bottle claustrophobic adventure, all set in a single small space (like a puddle jumper, or a locked room, or an offworld cell), any slash pairing; (2) Ronon and John and their LOVE for one another, offworld, with weapons and restive natives, and (one may hope), hot sex; (3) Carson as mad medical genius with no ethical constraints (which is on the prompt list but OMG! I really, really like it...). Actually, I'm pretty zen, plotwise, if you just give me my SLASHY GOODNESS.
4. One thing you don’t want to write: het
5. Note here if you haven't seen the series through the end of season three, so we don't give you a spoiler-filled request: Yep, seen it, all is groovy
6. Are you willing to be a pinch hit author at the last minute? No, sorry

3. I'd like a story about:
a) Elizabeth and Teyla, through use of their wits and people skills, get the Lantians out of a conflict with another Pegasus society; femslash and/or porn would be loved but is not absolutely necessary
b) The Lantians test the limits of their truce with the Genii when they team up to take out a Wraith outpost or Hive; could go well, horribly wrong, or anything inbetween; can be gen or include any level of Teyla/Sora, Elizabeth/Ronon, or John/Rodney
c) After months of trying, the Lantians finally get to open negotiations with a reclusive and mysterious Pegasus people who *do* keep their secret underground bunkers locked--but hijinks and sexy cultural misunderstandings ensue! Any rating and some level of Sheppard/McKay, please.
4. I can't do: Sheppard het
5: Pinch Hitter?: No
Out of curiosity, will we be told who we're writing for?
no subject
Date: 2007-06-30 12:02 am (UTC)to answer your question, on the 2nd, I'll be sending you an email which includes a brief rehash of the instructions, the posting deadlines, etc., and your recipient's name, lj name, three requests and what that won't write (to give you a better indication of what they might like).
We also encourage you, once the assignments are out, to make a post - a 'letter to your writer' with any more info you'd like to give them. And if you have a question that only your recipient can answer, we (
uh-- my 3 scenarios...
Date: 2007-06-29 01:49 am (UTC)Teyla, retelling the story of “her first love”, a culling, likely fits best during the episode ‘Phantoms’ or during recovery time in the infirmary…
Dr. Beckett, self defense mini-lessons (how to shoot a gun… or whatnot)
no subject
Date: 2007-06-29 02:10 am (UTC)2. onlyinourdreams [at] gmail.com
3. Three scenarios...
a) A Sheppard (or McKay) piece, post-Storm/Eye. Or, if you wish, McShep, post-Storm/Eye.
b) Missing scene from Aurora, maybe? I love the ships, both Ancient and Earth-made. Another Sheppard piece, maybe? You so know it responded to him just like Atlantis...
c) Anything from season one, especially team!fic. (Ford!)
4. I prefer to write McKay, Sheppard, or McShep, so none of the other pairings out there are for me. (Note: I love season one interactions/characters/situations, etc.)
5. I've seen all the episodes, so no worries :D
6. Sure, no problem. Though no hard feelings if I don't get that one done too, right? >>
Right, I came up with prompts
Date: 2007-06-29 02:13 am (UTC)2. Contact email: pouncer77@gmail.com
3. Three scenarios you’d like to receive in your story:
--Sheppard and Ronon resolving differences (or attempting to) about the Wraith after Common Ground. Gen or slash is fine.
--Elizabeth and Teyla after Return II brings them back to Atlantis. Gen, touching upon leadership, friendship, empathy, or rededication
--Lorne and Zelenka - wacky hijinx as military and scientific seconds in command. Maybe while Sheppard's team is offworld and they have to deal with some more or less serious crisis? Gen.
4. One thing you don’t want to write: I'll stay with the classic Beckett as a sexual being. Poor Carson.
5. Note here if you haven't seen the series through the end of season three, so we don't give you a spoiler-filled request: I've seen 'em all.
6. Are you willing to be a pinch hit author at the last minute? *hysterical laughter* Oh, you know it.
I can't resist.
Date: 2007-06-29 02:20 am (UTC)2. icarus_ancalion@yahoo.com
3. Three scenarios you’d like to receive in your story. I'm incredibly flexible because I join these things mostly to boot myself into writing. By the time the story arrives I probably won't remember what I requested. That said:
a) I really love stories that explore the beautiful and rugged Atlantis.
b) I really love to embarrass Sheppard and/or McKay.
c) I really love carefully thought-out Ancient technology that fits with the science on the show but isn't just a retread of what we've already seen.
4. One thing you don’t want to write. Het. I just don't particularly like it.
5. Note here if you haven't seen the series through the end of season three, so we don't give you a spoiler-filled request. I've seen it all thanks to the magic of illegal downloads.
6. Are you willing to be a pinch hit author at the last minute? I'm willing. I've no idea if I'll be able.

I'd like a story about
1) Ronon's reaction when he first found out about Teyla's Wraith DNA.
2) Ronon training Rodney is some kind of combat technique, can be fighting, stealth, defense, anything.
3) John and Rodney getting into trouble. This can be anything from mildly embarassing to life threatening. I just want to see the trouble twins in action.
This isn't so much something I won't write as a request. I write best in John or Rodney's POV so I'm more likely to write a decent story if one of them is the main character.
I've seen the season closer
I don't think i'll have time to be a pinch hitter.

3) Scenarios
--Zelenka and Lorne working on/testing a puddlejumper
--any two or more of the 'minor' characters discussing whether McKay and Sheppard are 'doing it' or not (and doing 'what' can be at the discretion of the author)
--POV of any of the medical staff besides Carson when any one or all of McKay, Sheppard, Teyla or Ronon are in the infirmary for at least an overnight stay
4) Can't do: nothing comes to mind
5) Pinch hit: probably, depends on the timing; ask

3. Three scenarios you’d like to receive in your story:
1) Someone close to them (preferably of Teyla/Ronon/Elizabeth/Radek) finds out about John and Rodney being together, whether through confession, eavesdropping, stumbling upon them, whatever. (No angsty ending for the guys, please.)
2) John and Rodney goofing off together. Golf, computer games, whatever. Slash or gen, but please no pairing them off with other people!
3) A day in the life of Teyla, whether it's high adventure, daily drudgery, or something shippy (I'm not picky who you pair her with, as long as it's not an established enemy). Or all three. :)
4. One thing you don’t want to write: John with anyone besides Rodney or Teyla
5. Note here if you haven't seen the series through the end of season three: I'm good. :)
