Summary: Rodney and Elizabeth talk about the past year.
Spoilers: Critical Mass, Duet, Trinity, possibly Before I Sleep
“Oh, there you are.” Rodney said managing to sound put out and almost happy at the same time as he stepped out onto the balcony beside Elizabeth.
“Hello Rodney. Were you looking for me? You could have just radioed if it was something important.” she replied.
“It’s not important. I mean, of course, it’s important to you and to me if I’m taking my time to do this but-“
“What are you talking about?”
”Hmm? Oh, happy birthday.” he said, gesturing with a small box. “I hope, that is, we hope you like it.”
“We?”
”The science team. Miko actually came up with the idea, but we all contributed. Even Kavanagh. If you don’t like the layout, just let Radek know. He can re-order it if you would like.”
”Re-order? What are you talking about, Rodney?”
”The neck- oh. Here. Open it.”
She stifled a laugh as he finally handed the box to her. As she was opening it, she casually asked, “Who told you it was my birthday?”
Rodney blinked, smiled smugly, and with an air of affected calm replied, “Did you miss the memo? I’m Dr. Rodney McKay, PhD, and actual certified genius. I know everything.”
At that Elizabeth did chuckle slightly, while opening the gift. Inside the small box was a necklace that looked like it had been put together from things that would have been lying around the lab. “Is this what I think it is?”
“Uh huh. You can only get so much use out of Earth technology when you’re working with the Ancient tech and after a while things get scavenged. And the Ancient tech, well it’s been sitting here for 10,000 years. Some of it doesn’t work anymore. But don’t worry. Radek and I have done a thorough analysis of every piece there and we know what they all do. It’s perfectly safe. And as I said, it you don’t like the arrangement, Radek can move the pieces around.”
“Thank you, Rodney. And thank the science team for me, would you?” she said, turning to look back at the ocean.
“Elizabeth?”
“Yes?”
”Is everything alright?”
“I’m fine Rodney.”
“I know no one expects me to have any understanding of social skills or appropriate behaviors or any of that personal interaction rules, but I am a genius and I do notice things. For example, I’ve noticed that you’ve been very detached lately. I thought it was probably about your birthday because women are supposed to hate getting older but in my opinion getting older only means getting more experience and why that is supposed to be a bad thing I’ll never know. And furthermore, you’re still much younger than the other you we found last year. Of course, Methuselah is much younger than her but regardless, you’re still very young and in the prime of your life so why are you letting the fact that you’re getting older get to you?”
“Rodney, I’m not depressed about getting older.”
”Is this about Caldwell being a Goa’uld? Because no one could have none that. Especially not you. None of us knew him before hand so we had no way of knowing that he was probably acting a little off. And that’s what they do anyway. They blend in. That’s their whole way of life now. And furthermore, you know Carson has done a full physical exam on every other person on Atlantis and the Deadulus so there’s no way one of us could be taken over.”
She turned to face him. ”Rodney. I’m not upset about Caldwell. I mean, of course, I was upset. But I don’t feel responsible. I just am finding it difficult to come to terms with the fact that in a crisis situation, I agreed with what a Goa’uld recommended as proper procedure. I sent Ronan in to get information from Kavanagh, not knowing what Ronan would do for sure, but willing to let him do it to save my own skin. I don’t know if I can ever come to terms with the fact that I was willing to condone torture. And I still haven’t been able to bring myself to go see him to apologize. And I know I should.” she finished, taking a deep breath.
“You’re right, you should. But you’re not the only one who has done things they regret in the past year. I seem to remember getting a very thorough chewing out by you as well as the cold shoulder from Sheppard for a good six months after blowing up most a galaxy.”
”That’s different.”
”How? I made a mistake. I’ll admit it. So did you. Neither of us are happy about it but we will deal with it. If anything my mistake was far larger than yours so I should be the one sulking on the balcony.”
“You did. Don’t you remember? Or was that in response to kissing Carson?”
”Very funny. You know that wasn’t me. That was Lt. Cadman. But the loud obnoxious man telling Radek he can’t understand anything on my level, that was me. And I did feel bad about doing it after. Mainly because I was wrong, but I still felt bad. I did feel better after I apologized.”
”You apologized to Radek?”
”Well, not in so many words. Or any words really. I did yell at him less for a while. Does that count?”
”So, you’re saying I should just go tell Kavanagh I’m sorry and that will make me a better person?”
”You don’t need to be a better person. You’re a perfectly good person as you are. Which is why you’re feeling guilty about what you did. But, what you aren’t understanding is that no one here blames you for what happened. We all understand and agree with your decision. Well, maybe not all of us. I haven’t done a poll. But most of us agree.”
”Including Kavanagh?”
”We didn’t start making your necklace until after that all happened. And Kavanagh still chipped in. I believe his exact words were, “If everyone else is, I suppose I will. If I don’t she’ll think I’m holding a grudge which I would have every right to!” Or something like that anyway. He starts babbling and after about ten words I tune him out if it’s not something important.”
“You give him ten words before you tune him out?”
“Well, usually. Sometimes. Anyway, happy birthday. Now if you will excuse me, I have to go the lab. Radek found something and we wanted to look it over before Sheppard comes to the lab and start teasing us.”
“Teasing you? What do you mean?”
”Colonel Sheppard seems to take great enjoyment in Radek’s and my, as he terms it, “geeking out” when we find a new piece of technology. If he weren’t so useful around the Ancient tech, I would seriously consider banning him from the labs.”
”No you wouldn’t. Even if he does “tease” you. Besides, you know very well that you have “teased” him about weapons.” She reached up and tapped her headset. “Colonel Sheppard?’
“Yes, Dr. Weir?” came Sheppard’s voice over the radio.
“Could you come to my office for a moment? I have something I need to discuss with you.”
“I suppose I could but I’m kind of on my way to something.” he said reluctantly.
“Shouldn’t take too long. No more than a half hour.” she replied.
“On my way.”
“Thank you.” She turned her radio off. “Now Rodney, I can keep him busy for probably an hour if you want to geek out without an audience for a bit. And thanks again for the necklace. And everything else.”
”You’re welcome. Enjoy your meeting.” He turned and walked away.
